Job Description

NuVasive is seeking a Mechanical or Biomedical Engineer to become a member of our Customs & Specials Team. The team is a part of the larger development group and is responsible for designing, manufacturing, and fulfilling special and/or unique instrument requests facilitated by surgeons in the spine market.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Utilize knowledge of various mechanisms, engineering practices, mathematics, material science, and other physical sciences to create functional surgical instruments designed for use in the OR.

  • Make engineering, manufacturing, and materials decisions based upon surgeons’ desired specifications and intended clinical use.

  • Interact with other internal teams, such as marketing, purchasing, regulatory, quality engineering, machine shop, and quality inspection, to ensure designs comply with applicable FDA and state regulations, as well as standards including, but not limited to, ISO 13485.

  • Work effectively with peers within the Customs & Specials Team to support and complete assigned projects. Manage assigned instrument requests by starting and completing CHR and cDHR files – including, but not limited to, designing, testing, and inspecting parts.

  • Interface with in-house machine shop, as well as outside vendors/suppliers, to solve technical challenges/issues during the manufacturing process.

  • Create and support the development of prototypes using in-house rapid prototyping equipment or by outsourcing to external vendors/suppliers.

  • Provide administrative support for projects such as ordering base parts, verifying shipping destinations and generating shipping requests.

  • Complete in-house, comprehensive spine course to better understand the basic anatomy and physiology of the spine, surgical procedures which products will be designed and developed for, and existing systems marketed by NuVasive.

  • Support surgeon education platform by running the C-Arm (fluoroscopy) for surgeon training courses in our in-house cadaver lab.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science (Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or equivalent)

  • 1 to 2 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience in translating functional requirements into functional mechanical solutions.

  • Experience with the CAD development environment, component data sheets, and mechanical test methods and equipment.

  • Basic knowledge of design and manufacturing processes (machining, molding, forming, joining, coating, additive, etc.).

  • Some experience in implementing mechanical design solutions that require analytical approaches.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively and efficiently.

  • Ability to respond and adapt to changing priorities.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proficient in developing test plans, protocols/test scripts, and test reports.

  • Must be skilled with standard Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

  • Medical device development environment experience.

  • Computer Assisted Design (CAD) experience, preferably in Creo, Pro/E, or SolidWorks. (Please note that the CAD suite used by NuVasive Inc. is Creo) .
